Roundtable VIRTUAL Discussion – Event by Megan Riccardi, Salem City Councillor – Ward 6
Monday, February 1, 2021 at 6:30 PM EST – 8 PM EST
Price: Free · Duration: 1 hr 30 min
Online: preservingsalem.com
The City of Salem is in the process of developing a master plan to guide future improvements, expansion, and long-term management of its largest place of interment, the 55-acre historic Greenlawn Cemetery.
Dating to 1807, Greenlawn was enlarged and embellished in the mid 19th century and laid out in the Rural or Garden Cemetery style. The property recently was added to the National Register of Historic Places, but despite this honor, suffers from decades of minimal maintenance. A shortage of available interment space has diminished the cemetery’s ability to financially sustain itself, further compromising upkeep.
Through the master planning process, the City hopes to restore the character and quality of Greenlawn’s historic landscape, funding this effort, in part, through the development and sale of new, sensitively designed interment sites.
THE CITY WELCOMES YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS!
